Professor Aali Sheen qualified in medicine from the University of Dundee in 1993. He became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1998 (FRCS), obtaining a Doctorate in 2003 from the University of Manchester (M.D.) followed by his final specialist fellowship from the Intercollegiate board in General Surgery in 2005 (FRCS Gen Surg). Professor Sheen undertook training in General Surgery in London, Hertfordshire, Oxford and Manchester following which he undertook specialised HepatoPancreato-Biliary (Liver, Pancreas and Gallbladder) training in both Manchester and Leeds as well as specialist hernia surgery training in Sweden. 

His main clinical interests are diseases of the Liver, Pancreas, Gallbladder and Bile duct as well as Hernia surgery, with expertise in advanced laparoscopic 'keyhole' surgery and mainly undertakes procedures for the treatment of gallstones and cancers of both the Liver and Pancreas, inguinal hernias & the sportsman?s groin (inguinal disruption).

Since his appointment as a Consultant in 2005, he is one of the very few internationally recognised hernia specialist in the North of England, with almost 100 publications, 4 book chapters and invitations to speak at many international & national hernia conferences, he is also the President of the British Hernia Society (2020 - 22). Prof.Sheen has been invited to undertake live surgery at conferences in Holland, Turkey and Greece to date. He undertook the world’s first inguinal hernia repair using the Versius robotic platform (rvTEP) ini 2020 as well as conducting the world’s first randomised controlled trial for the sportsman’s groin. Prof. Sheen also re-named the sportsman’s hernia as ‘inguinal disruption’ at a consensus conference in 2014 in Manchester. He has also published two innovative surgical techniques, The Manchester Groin Repair, which has a chronic pain incidence of 0.3% & his minimally invasive liver mobilisation technique. 

Professor Sheen has operated and repaired the groins of many high profile Premiership football players, league players, Scottish FA teams, European footballers as well as international cricket stars, rugby players (League and Union), GB martial arts team, olympic rowers and motor racing drivers.
